Seaside Holiday

Standard

I haven’t been about the blog much the last week or so as we have been on holiday at the  beach.  Despite some very rainy weather and sick children, we were able to have some beachy fun.

The holiday was a great opportunity to get into the ‘Under the Sea’ theme we have been exploring, especially with a trip to Underwater World.  It was a perfect rainy weather destination!  Here are some pics

Seaside Holiday

This weekend I am getting my Easter craft underway.  My youngest and I had such a lovely morning gathering all the little bits and pieces I need.  If all goes to plan, I should have some cute stuff to show you in the next week.

I hope you are all having a wonderful week.

Under the Sea: Kid’s Artwork Design Shirt

Standard

Here is a cheap art activity you can do with your kiddies and they will feel pretty proud of themselves doing it.

Pick up cheap cotton t-shirt.  I picked this one up on clearance at Target for $1.73. Bargain!

Using a dressmaker’s pen, get your child to draw their t-shirt design onto the fabric.

Kid's Artwork Shirt

After placing a piece of paper in between the shirt’s front and back, trace over your child’s  drawing with laundry pen.

Kid's Artwork Shirt

Wash the shirt to remove the dressmaker’s pen marks and its ready to wear.

Kid's Artwork Shirt

You of course could skip a step and allow your child to use the laundry pen to draw the picture.  Just be aware that there are no ‘do overs’ and that on some fabrics the pen can bleed quite easily.

To keep with our Under the Sea theme, Master O drew some sea animals – fish, jelly fish and sea urchins. So cute.

Blue Elephant Baptismal Party

Standard

I thought I would share with you a little party we held with our family after my youngest’s baptism a month ago.

It wasn’t a huge or lavish affair.  I wanted things to be low-key and simple (well as simple as I can allow things to be) given the event was coming off the back of ripper party season and the weather was sweltering.  As it was a mid-morning affair, I choose decorations and food that could be prepared the day before, allowing me to enjoy the party instead of being crazy busy.  I must apologise as  I didn’t photograph everything, but hopefully there are enough to give you an idea of what it was like.

I have wanted to have a baby elephant themed party for one of my boys for such a long time.   When I came across a whole heap of blue elephant party items on clearance, it was locked in.   After all, this was probably my last opportunity to throw a ‘cutesy’ themed party for my growing boys.

So, the theme – elephants. The colour palette – blue and chocolate with the addition of polkadots for some fun.

The food table had a milk and cookies kind of vibe.  I had a variety of plain and flavoured milks in pitchers for guest to pour into their own miniature milk bottles.

Blue Elephant Baptismal Party

All of the sweets I made the day before.  Mini Oreo topped cupcakes, vanilla and white chocolate cake pops and brownies.

Instead of a cake, I decided on a two-tiered Oreo stacked ‘cake’.  I got the idea from a Martha Stewart show and just had to recreate it. I topped this with a little wooden elephant I painted blue to suit the theme.

Blue Elephant Baptism

Other sweets on the table included blue and white M&Ms and butter cookies.  We also served up cut fruit as a healthier sweet option.

For those who preferred savoury to the sweet, we had a variety of sandwiches and rice paper rolls.

Blue Elephant Baptismal Party

To decorate, the food table had a blue and white polkadot material backdrop.  You can read how I do these here.  Pinned to the backdrop were some blue and chocolate paper garlands I made on my sewing machine.  I love how these look and they are really simple to make.  You can see my blog post on how to make these here.

The coordinating partyware was used to decorate the patio where I had the tea and coffee station set up.  I neglected to photograph this but you can grab a glimpse of it to the side of this pic.

The baptismal boy was dressed to fit the theme in his blue and white polkadot elephant shirt.  I got the talented Linda from Loui with Love to embroider this especially for the day. Amazingly, after a couple of Oreos, this shirt still remained clean.

Blue Elephant Baptismal Party

Despite being dreadfully hot, it was a lovely morning.  I was delighted that my planning, and restraint, resulted in a relatively fuss-free event.   It seems I may be learning a thing or two as I get older.

Under the Sea Sensory Tub

Standard

Yesterday I told you about the ‘Under the Sea’ theme I began with my kids and our great seaside dessert.  Today we had a bit of wet and messy fun investigating our sensory tub.

Children learn best when they engage their whole body and this tactile activity is especially stimulating.

Under the Sea Sensory Tub

I filled a tub with water, some water beads and a variety of plastic sea animals, shells and pebbles.  The boys put on waterproof smocks and I let them go for it.

Under the Sea Sensory Tub

This was a great activity for both my 1-year-old and 4-year-old.  Master O helped his little brother by naming the different animals as he played with them.  As they explored, we talked about  what we knew about the animals and identified a few things we wanted to learn about their habits.

Under the Sea Sensory Tub

This was our first proper sensory tub and I think the kids and I are hooked.   They got a little wet, despite the smocks, but I guess that is part of the fun.  It is certainly cheap fun.  It didn’t cost anything as I just gathered items we had sitting around the house.

Under the Sea: Seaside Dessert

Standard

My two boys are obsessed with dinosaurs.  This obsession has been going strong for nearly 10 months now with my eldest and it is starting to wear thin.  While I love that my 4-year-old can rattle off hundreds of  dinosaurs facts and pronounce some dinosaur names better than I can, I would like to widen his interests.

He is a little documentary buff, so a lightbulb went off as I watched him engrossed in David Attenborough’s, The Blue Planet.  There is heaps of scope for ‘Under the Sea’ fun and a tonne of resources and ideas out there on the net.

So for the last few weeks I have been madly pinning ideas and gathering materials from about the home and the dollar stores to start some sealife fun.  Drop by and check out some of the fun stuff I have pinned here.

To kick off our ‘Under the Sea’ fun, I made a couple of seaside desserts for us to share.  It was a heap of fun, it looked great and Master O LOVED it.  Take a look…..

Under the Sea: Seaside Dessert

Under the Sea: Seaside Dessert

To make the sea, I poured some blue jelly into some deep-ish plastic plates.  As it was setting, I dropped a few fish lollies into the jelly.  For some reason I couldn’t find any fish-shaped lollies, so I resorted to cutting them out of sour straps.  The sand was made of crushed custard cream biscuits, blitzed in the Thermomix.  The striped sour straps made for colourful beach towels, Jelly Babies as beach goers and cocktail umbrellas as beach umbrellas.

If it were up to my 4-year-old, we would be having this as dessert every night.  I have seen some other great seaside desserts about the web which I will aim to try out for him in the near future.  I have pinned some to my Pinterest board if you to want to make your own seaside dessert fun.

Over the next few weeks I will post about some of our ‘Under the Sea’ adventures, so stay tuned.

Super Easy and Healthier Pancakes

Standard

Happy Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day!

A few weeks ago I wrote about some of the ways I organise myself for a streamlined breakfast time.  It was then that I promised that I would share with you a great pancake recipe.  Today seems like the perfect day to live up to that promise.

I love this recipe as it is super easy to remember, always produces fluffy pancakes, has only 3 ingredients and no sugar.

Basic Pancakes – Serves 2+ (from here)

Ingredients

1 cup self-raising flour

1 cup milk (full cream, skim, soy)

1 egg

Fantastic Basic Pancake Recipe

Method

1. Whisk egg into milk

2. Place flour into a bowl and incorporate the milk and egg mixture

3. Lightly grease a fry pan with butter or spray oil

4. Cook large spoonfuls of mixture until bubble appear on the surface and the edges firm

5. Turn pancakes and cook until the other side is golden brown

Fantastic Basic Pancake Recipe

There is no need to add sugar to this recipe if you are serving with sweet toppings.  You could choose to add a few tablespoons of sugar if you prefer a sweeter cake.  Sometimes I add vanilla to this recipe for a change.

One tip I swear by is letting the batter rest for a little while before cooking.  If you are ravenous and must jump right in, you are still going to end up with fantastic pancakes, but if you can wait 10-20 minutes, the pancakes will be fluffier.

When I make extras to freeze for breakfasts or morning teas, I layer grease proof paper between the cakes before freezing in ziplock bags.  30 seconds in the microwave, they are warm and ready for topping.

I hope you enjoy this recipe.

Best Buy: Chalkboard Speech Bubble

Standard

I fell in love with the idea of using chalkboard speech bubble messages in photos ages ago.  I love how they can add such whimsy and meaning to ordinary photos.

My intention for at least the last 2 years has been to create my own chalkboard speech bubble, but do you think I could get the motivation to do so?  So when I saw Target had magnetic, chalkboard speech bubbles on sale, I rushed out to get one.

So what do I intend to use it for, you ask?  I think it will be a great way of recording times my 1-year-old says a new word.

Speech bubble chalkboard photos

Or recording  funny things my 4-year-old says or does.

Speech bubble chalkboard photos

Keeping a track of important days or events.

Speech bubble chalkboard photos

Or just for a bit of fun.

This way I will not only have a written record of these memories but a visual one too.  I can’t wait to get creative with my bargain buy!
